Fishing Reports For Flamingo (Everglades National Park)
November 2007
This month I have been backcountry fishing in Hell's Bay and Pearl bay and pretty much had the whole place to myself.  My
customers have been having a ball catching snook in sizes of 4"-42" all month long.  We have been averaging about 30
snook per trip.  However when the full moon came in the picture the numbers dwindled down to as low as 8 snook which
really wasn't too bad for a slow day.  I also noticed that when the first major cold snap came through snook greater than
18" seemed to be hard to find.  Redfish up in the shallow flats is what I have been chasing in the afternoons.  As the water
temp warms they come out of their pockets and holes and venture on the flats in search of little bait fish.  I have been
throwing Rapala Skitter walks for them to get the excitement of a surface explosion.  For all you hard core fly guys out there
you would be pleased to know that the fly has been working better than anything else.  I was lucky enough to finally land a
15 pound snook on fly that has been in one of my spots that has schooled many of my anglers in the past.
October 2007
Well the month of October has been a very exciting time for me in the Glades.  I have decided to devote this slower month
of charters to exploring new fishing grounds in the far remote backcountry of Hells' Bay, Pearl Bay, and Lane Bay located
inside Everglades National Park.  The few customers I have had this month have been very fortunate to visit waters that
only a handful of people have ever fished.  Which means it is not all that uncommon to have days where we may catch over
a hundred Snook, Tarpon, and Redfish on artificial lures and flies.  These fish range in size from 6 inches all the way to 20
pounds and were all released to be caught another day.  The only details and advise I can give you about locations is that
you better have a good sense of direction because there are no charts or maps telling you how to get home.  I once heard
a story about another guide who had fished the area for over 20 years that got lost for several days in those remote ponds.
Tight Lines and Great Fishing,
Hot Spots:
Snook and Redfish: Falling tides of Shark River and little Sable Creek.  Tarpon can also be found up to 30 Pounds tearing up
bait balls in these areas.  Trout can also be found on the grassier edges and potholes of Shark and Little Shark River.

September 2007

This month is somewhat of a difficult month to fish if you don't understand what the fish are doing and why.  The first thing you
have to remember is that the water is extremely hot and the fish are about at the end of their tolerance for it.  So what they will do
is venture into cooler water.  In the middle of the day try to get up and underneath the mangrove trees and work the shadows
where the fish should be laid up.  Tarpon are not affected by the hot water!  They are a lot like Permit on the flats.  The hotter and
more humid it is the larger their apatite should be.  I like to observe the baits that are present and more particularly the size of the
bait.  This is critical in getting that consistent bite.  I have had to downsize my Rapala X-Raps this month because of this reason.
Redfish are all over the place in the river inlets and can be caught in great numbers and all size ranges.  Fishing on the bottom with
Bass Assassin Eel Assassins have been the number one soft plastic bait for them in the chartreuse and white colors.  Also
remember to take the proper precasions when releasing a hot and tired snook.  Gently place the fish in the water and work him in a
side to side motion rather than a front to back motion to get that much needed oxygen into the gills.  Sometimes I may pull my
oxygen system out and revive the fish in the bait well if there are sharks present.  If you would like to check out the system I use
Fish Flow Oxygen Systems
Tight Lines and Great Fishing
Hot Spots: Rabit Key Basin for Snapper and Goliath Grouper.  Dildo Key and Snake Bite Flats for Redfish up and on the Flats.  Snook
can be found on the beaches and along the mangroves in the river inlets.
Exploring Remote Ponds
You can experience fishing in some of the most
remote backcountry ponds Florida has to offer.
There are thousands of ponds in the Everglades
and each one of them holds
Snook, Tarpon,
Redfish, and many more all year long.  During
these
backcountry fishing trips you will probably
not see a boat all day long.  So if you are looking
to get away from the daily grind of traffic and
cell phone ringing you have come to the right
place. Please be sure to check out some of the
backcountry fishing photos.

Captain Rich Smith has been seeing bones and
permit all over Biscayne Bay of late. Large
schools of permit are showing up inside
Midnight Pass and on the snake leading into
Caesar’s Creek. Cutter
Bank has been the most consistent for
bonefish. Fishermen staked off at Curtis Point
reported seeing a few schools of tarpon
heading south, but the fish were apparently
not in an eating mood. Rich and his
clients also had some fun the other day with
lemon and blacktip sharks in the 5-9 foot range

While recent NE and E winds have
made visibility difficult in Biscayne
Bay, some bonefish and permit
are still being caught. Captain
Rich Smith has been spotting
tarpon traveling north and south
on the outside of Elliot Key.
They've been looking for big
schools of mullet to feed on.....

The weather lately has been great for
fishing. Biscayne Bay continued to
produce some nice bonefish and permit
for Captain Rich Smith this week.
Hotspots included Burger King Flat, East
Arsenicker Key, Midnight Pass and
Porpoise Point. Too much saltwater
intrusion .....

The wait is finally over. According to
Captain Rich Smith, the bonefish in
Biscayne Bay have settled into their
normal working patterns. Hot spots
include Ragged Keys, Sands Cut, Cutter
Bank and Midnight Pass. He also spotted
a school of 30 tarpon between 50 and
150 pounds heading North, just outside
of Caesars Creek. Oh yes, they have
arrived........

Captain Rich Smith has been throwing live
shrimp and crabs at bonefish in Biscayne
Bay. He is having the most luck on the
leeward side of the islands when the wind
is blowing. Bones are showing up in schools
of 2-10 on low, incoming tides. Last week
in the Everglades, one of his clients boated
three tarpon over 80 pounds and lost
several more. Snook and redfish are biting
on Rapala twitch-raps and Bass Assassin
eels in the backcountry.

March 28th
Although spring winds continue to make
fishing tough in many areas, Captain Rich
Smith, reports that snook and redfish
fishing has significantly improved in the
everglades. Large snook over 30 inches
were eating Rapala X-raps in Whitewater
Bay, Hells Bay and Pearl bay. Fly fishing, on
the other hand, remained difficult. Unless,
of course, you find a good spot out of the
wind. The same goes for Biscayne Bay,
with .........
